U.S. winter or New Zealand’s summer? You could be like the birds who fly south for the winter. When the winter comes, you can fly to someplace warm. When your summer becomes unbearably hot, you can fly to someplace a little cooler. Summers in New Zealand are in the winter months in the U.S. If you don’t want to switch from t-shirt, tanks, and shorts just yet, book a trip to New Zealand’s Queenstown. It is here on the shore of Lake Wakatipu that Queenstown has the most amazing summer that includes horseback riding, bungy jumping, hiking, canyon jumping, river rafting, and so much more.
The Lord of the Rings
“One ring to rule them all, one ring to find them, one ring to bring them all, and in the darkness bind them.” Now, I am not a Lord of the Rings dedicated fan, but for those that are, Queenstown is a perfect starting point for the Lord of the Rings road trip tour.
You will start out in Auckland, and then make your way to Matamata where the shire is located. You will then drive to the Taupo region which was used to film Mordor. While Wellington is a 3 to 4 hour drive, you will truly appreciate this location as this was the home base for the film crew, and it is also here that they filmed the flight from the Nazgul and the hidden hideout of Rivendell. In Nelson, Jens Hansen can be found making his jewelry. He is the man behind the artistry of the rings forged for the films. In fact, it is here that one of the original rings is located, and for those who want a duplicate, you can buy them here. In Queenstown, you will drive up to Skippers Canyon Road and see the magical place in which Arwan called upon the water to swallow the Nazgul. If you are up for horseback riding, there are trails you can take to see Isengard, Amon hen, and Lothlorien. Another great way to see some of these sets is by hiring a helicopter.
While all of this would take you a few days to do, a true fan of J.R.R. Tolkien series would not blink an eye at that.
This is the home of bungee jumping. Two guys from New Zealand launched this death defying act upon the world, and years later, it seems to almost be a sport. There are so many different places here in Queenstown to do it, and it is an almost “have to do it” if you are visiting this country.
I have never done such a feat, but I would. I remember the sound of my blood pumping in my ears, my heart beat racing out of control, my breath coming in short pants, and then. . . I jumped—but this was cliff jumping into water. When I surged back up to the surface, adrenalin was pumping through me. It was a proud moment for myself, I wonder what I will feel like when I bungee jump for the first time?
There are gift shops, dining areas--you can even dive for your own dinner, strolls on the beach, and much more. Give air-savings.com a call to book you a memorable trip to Queenstown, New Zealand.
