Lufthansa has canceled 1,200 of its 1,800 flights Friday, September 7, 2012  following a strike call by its cabin crew protesting proposed pay cuts and changes to their employment contract.

The German carrier has canceled 48 flights for Thursday as well.

Lufthansa said the nationwide strike call prompted it to cancel the majority of flights.

Lufthansa flights from New York, Boston, Atlanta, San Francisco, Denver, Los Angeles, Chicago, Miami, Fort Worth-Dallas and Seattle are among those canceled.

Travelers from India should note that Lufthansa flights from Mumbai, New Delhi, Chennai and Bengaluru for September 7, 2012 have been canceled.

Passengers Hit Hard

Media reports from Germany say thousands of passengers are already stranded in Frankfurt.

The airline told travelers to expect unscheduled cancellations and delays of Lufthansa flights.

Although flights of Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Germanwings and SWISS as well as LH codeshare flights are not expected to be hit by the strike, Lufthansa cautioned travelers that it was not sure of the impact of the strike.

Flights of other airlines are also likely to be impacted by the strike since a large number of Lufthansa aircraft are parked on the tarmac leaving less room for incoming or outgoing flights.

Even after the strike ends, travelers should be prepared for irregularities in flight operations over the weekend.

Rebooking and Refunds

Lufthansa said it'd allow passengers whose flights have been cancelled to get a refund or rebook their flights free of charge.

To mollify irate travelers, the airline is offering all passengers with tickets issued on/before September 4, 2012 for Lufthansa operated flights (even if not cancelled) departing before Saturday, September 8, 2012, 11:59PM one rebooking onto alternate flights by Lufthansa, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines Germanwings or Swiss free of charge.

However, the new travel has to happen before November 30, 2012. Also, passengers cannot change the origin and destination.
