When freeways are built and expanded, or when road work is done to create a better way for drivers, do you ever stop to really read that big white sign that says, "your tax dollars at work?"  I do.  In any country you live in, you hope that all those taxes you are required to fork over on payday is being used for something worthwhile.  When traveling, especially internationally, we all hope that our tourist dollar is being used for good.  Barbara Messing, CMO for TripAdvisor has found that more people who are traveling in 2012 are wanting to go greener in their travel as well as knowing exactly what their tourist dollar is being used for.

How many of you would like to travel to countries that you know is making very positive changes to their environment and for their people?  Hell yes!  See that kid in the classroom shaking his hand high in the air--that's me.

What if I told you it was as easy as a list?

While researching travel trends, I came upon this site.  I knew I wanted to expand on Barbara Messing's findings, and this just blew it up for me.  I could travel to these countries on this list knowing that my tourist dollar is not going to support war, guns, corrupt politicians, etc.  These are countries who are making positive changes to promote a better world for themselves which in turn promotes tourism.  These winners for 2012 are:

  • Argentina

  • The Bahamas

  • Chile

  • Costa Rica

  • Dominica

  • Latvia

  • Mauritius

  • Palau

  • Serbia

  • Uruguay

I recently wrote an article, Travel is possible with your tax refund, and I mentioned a country called Myanmar, originally called Burma.  I am again going to mention this country because not only has this country been noticed by ethicaltraveler.org, but so has the U.S. Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton.  She says she is seeing signs that this country is truly opening its doors to tourism again.  Here is the travel information you will need to know before traveling there.

All you readers out there, give us your comments about this site I found, or even just comment on these countries.  We would love your input.
