For many travellers, getting through all the layers of security at the airport before boarding their planes is an exercise in itself. It can be so enervating and boring that some people almost dread it. But it is unavoidable unless, of course, you’re some head of state or a top diplomat.

If, however, you come prepared and try to follow the security guidelines, you won’t really have a tough time. The first thing you can do, for instance, is carry only as much as you need. Take a look at the TSA website (or the website of whichever organization that handles security at your airport) for all those things that are prohibited, and either leave all of them behind or, if they are permitted in your checked luggage, put them there. Just make sure your hand baggage is light and organized and doesn’t carry prohibited items.

If you don’t have checked baggage, you have to be extra careful with your packing, especially with the cosmetics you carry. Remember that there is a limit to the amount of liquid you can carry with you on the plane and all containers carrying that liquid must be packed in a plastic zip-lock bag. If possible, try to avoid such fluids. For example, you could use solid deodorants instead of the liquid ones, and creams instead of liquid moisturizers and so on. Also, sharp objects such as scissors and knives are a strict no-no. Carrying such items in your cabin luggage will only result in more time with security. So be clever with your packing.

Again, if you can, then keep all your jackets and coats in your checked luggage. Wearing them means an additional item for you to send through the scanner, which is rather time consuming. Also, wear slip-ons instead of shoes because, as part of the procedure, you’ll have to send your footwear through the x-ray machine and it’s certainly much easier to take your slippers (rather than your shoes) off for the whole exercise.

Finally, always keep your documents handy. You don’t want to start fiddling in your bags when someone asks you for your id or boarding pass. These documents must be within your reach at all times so keep them in an easily accessible location such as your shirt pocket.

It is important to remember here that all these procedures are for our own benefit and safety. With that understanding, try to cooperate with the security guys and follow all their instructions with a smile. If you cooperate, the process will be much smoother and faster.
