When the concept of frequent flyer miles was introduced, everyone was sceptical. But with time, it proved its worth; it established itself as a great rewards program which, unlike most others, was not an eyewash.

Today, almost all major airlines have such a program which allows regular travellers to earn miles that they can redeem to get a full ticket. However, as with all promotional schemes, this one too has a drawback; the miles come a little too slowly and by the time they’re enough for you to purchase a ticket, they expire.

In order to accelerate the accumulation of your points, you have to act smartly. A few intelligent decisions and practices will help you a long way to get those miles quickly. The first most important decision is to register yourself to get the credit or debit card associated with your airline’s frequent flyer account. Make all your ticket purchases with that card and you’ll see that the rate at which your miles grow increases exponentially. And not just tickets, any purchases you make will contribute something to your mileage account.

Another smart move would be to remain loyal to one or, at most, two airlines (if that is possible for you) because this loyalty will pay off very nicely in the form of gratuitous mileage rewards. Also, you’ll notice that instead of having small amounts of mileage points in different airlines’ accounts, you’ll have one account with a greater number of points, which is much more useful if you need to redeem them for a ticket.

Apart from all that, sign up for your airlines’ newsletters. Although newsletters are boring and nobody reads them, they often contain valuable information regarding how you can earn more points. They also keep you updated on other promotional offers and schemes that can save you money.

If you know someone close who has a lot of rewards and is in no need of them, and if that person is generous enough, then you can ask that person to transfer his or her points to your account.

Although, the surest and fastest way of accumulating more frequent flyer miles is to fly a lot, the tips mentioned above will definitely complement your efforts. The trick is to make smart and well informed decisions.
